AVID

Mesa offers a 7th grade AVID class taught be the phenomenal Ms. MaryEllen Mosley and an 8th grade class taught by the 20 year Mesa veteran Mr. Tom Hall.

AVID is an elective class that stands for Achievement Via Individual Determination.  This is a nationwide program whose mission is “to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.”  In other words, AVID wants to help students develop the skills needed to be accepted to and succeed at a 4-year university after high school.  Our focus is to help students improve their writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading skills to prepare them for high school and college. The aim of AVID is to select students that might face external challenges in their journey to attend college or be from a group that is traditionally underrepresented in universities (i.e. first in family to attend college, poverty, English language learners, etc) For over 40 years, AVID  has been instrumental in preparing students for success in higher education.

AVID is a place where kids are expected to work hard and challenge themselves to develop the skills they will need to succeed in college and beyond.  Specifically we work on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading skills.  What this looks like in class is a lot of projects, presentations, debates, and peer tutorials.  We also throw the best class parties in the state.  Our motto is "Work Hard, Play Hard!"
